Voltage Dividers and Resistance Bridges

In this lab, students will learn how to recognize and analyze voltage divider and resistance bridge circuits. A voltage divider is a linear circuit that produces an output voltage smaller than its input voltage; it works by splitting the input voltage among its components. A bridge circuit is a circuit with two branches that are connected by a conductive bridge. Both types of circuit have numerous influential real-world applications, as students will discover through both simulation and hands-on work using NI ELVIS III.

This is lab 5 of 10 in the course, Introduction to Circuits.

After completing this lab, students will be able to:
  1. Discuss the purpose of voltage dividers and resistance bridges; provide example scenarios of when they would be used.
  2. Calculate the expected voltage output of various voltage divider configurations; verify using simulation and instrumentation.
  3. Design and implement an appropriate voltage divider, given desired specifications and component constraints.
  4. Calculate the expected voltage output across the bridge of various resistance bridge configurations; verify using simulation and instrumentation.
  5. Design and implement a balanced resistance bridge and measure a resistance across the bridge.
