Circuits Laboratory Companion

The Circuits Laboratory Companion is the perfect counterpart to Circuits by Ulaby, Maharbiz, and Furse, providing an out-of-box, affordable, university lab solution. The distinctive feature of this collection of 11 labs is the integration of NI Multisim, LabVIEW software and NI ELVIS II hardware that fosters comparison between theory, simulation, lab data and analysis.
by Dr. Alexander Ganago and Dr. Jason Lee Sleight | University of Michigan Ann Arbor

  • Students gain practical knowledge of circuits by the use of NI Multisim, LabVIEW, and NI ELVIS in lab exercises.
  • Students actively participate and differentiate between theory, simulation, lab data, and analysis.

Level University
Topic Circuits
Style Lab Manual
Prerequisite Skills None

Students will build circuits on the prototyping board and how to connect them to NI ELVIS. Students will be exposed to Ohm's law and will practice and observe voltage division in DC and AC measurements.
Students will learn how to simulate circuits and obtain data such as output voltages with NI Multisim. Students will build semiconductor diodes circuits on NI ELVIS prototyping board and take data with NI ELVIS test/measurement instruments.
Students will learn about the Thevenin equivalent circuit, circuits that do not reduce to parallel/series connection, and potentiometers.
Students will learn about operational amplifiers (op amps), inverting and noninverting amplifier circuits with fixed and variable gain based on op amps, and the Gain Bandwidth product, the buffer, or voltage follower, and its significance.
Students will learn about responses of first-order RC circuits to square-wave input signals of various frequencies.
Students will learn about responses of second-order series RLC circuit to square-wave input signal, variable capacitors, and parasitic capacitance and resistance of the circuit.
Students will learn how to measure the phase shift between the input and output voltages and compare their lab data to calculations of the same phase shifts and ad sinusoidal output voltages in order to reproduce the sinusoidal input voltage.
Students will learn how to simulate various circuits in order to study the effectiveness of power transfer from the source to the load, and relate your own sensory experience to the measurements of voltages and calculations of the power transferred to the load.
Students will learn about the transfer function of a circuit, four types of filters, pass-band of a filter, slope of filters' transfer function on a log-log plot, passive and active filters, and first-order and second order filters.
Students will learn about the Laplace transform and Multisim Arbitrary Waveform Generator. In the lab, students will build several first-order circuits and second-order circuits and measure the responses to the input waveforms created in the pre-lab.
Students will learn about the Fourier series, the Fourier spectra of standard signals, and the application of Fourier analysis to building a power supply. In this lab, students will measure the waveforms and Fourier spectra of standard signals, build a half-wave rectifier circuit without any filter and with a Low-Pass filter, and measure its output waveforms and spectra in 3 cases.
