Labs for the Quanser QNET VTOL Board

Working with NI ELVIS II and VTOL board.
This lab introduces students to the fundamentals of flight dynamics and vertical take-off and landing flight control. Students complete activities in LabVIEW to model a system, design and implement proportional-integral (PI) and proportional-integral-derivative (PID) controllers to control current, and find the system resistance based on measurements. The ABET-aligned labs each include an overview of control theory, in lab exercises, and assessments.

INCLUDED COURSE MODULES

Students learn qualitative current control. In this lab, current is fed to the QNET VTOL and a current-controller is used to regulate the current in the motor.
Students will cover topics of system identification and finding the natural frequency.
Students cover topics of current control, proportional-integral (PI) control according to specifications, and finding the system resistance based on measurements.
Students cover topics of model validation and system identification using LabVIEW.
Students cover topics of proportional integral-derivative (PID) control design and steady-state analysis. In this lab, students calculate the theoretical QNET VTOL steady-state error.
Students cover topics of proportional-integral-derivative (PID) flight control and control design according to specifications.

Quanser QNET VTOL Add-On Board

The Quanser QNET VTOL 2.0 add-on board for NI ELVIS is a 1 DOF helicopter system that provides an introduction to flight dynamics, kinematics, and control. The system consists of a variable speed fan mounted on a cantilever arm with a high-resolution optical encoder for position measurement.
